Coming home from work a couple weeks ago, my wife's A4 started to misfire and finally went into limp mode. As this happened once before, I always kept a spare coilpak in the trunk. Took my laptop out and found misfires on 1,3, and 4. It appeared that 1 had a couple more. So, I changed the coilpak on 1. The misfires on 3 and 4 went away, but 1 remained. Not knowing that the replaced coilpak was actually good, I swapped it with 4 and the misfires still was on 1. Was able to get it to a parking lot and called tow truck. Repair shop said it needed new plugs, coilpaks and #1 injector replaced and 2,3,4 cleaned at a cost of $1700 which I thought was way out of line, but not having any other good choices went ahead. After the work, they took it on a test drive and same issue, #1 misfire. Next they done a compression check and said that a burnt valve was likely, which would add another $2400 on top of the $1700. The valve was definitely bad and the plugs definitely needed replacing. Managed to get them to come off $1000 on the work so had 4 plugs replaced, replaced #1 injector, cleaned 2,3,4. replaced valve and head bolts for $3100. Was even $3100 out of line for this work or does it sound reasonable?
