Subframe Bushing Replacement

Anyone ever change their subframe bushings on a C5 A6?

We have engine & trans already pulled for replacing various worn parts & subframe bushings are on the list. Bentley talks about using a special split bushing tool for pulling out & pulling in bushings. I was wondering if any of you guys have managed doing it w/o this tool, & care to share some advise/tips.
