B5 A4 starts, won't run

Hi all,

I have a 2001 B5 A4, 30v 2.8 V6, manual.

Currently it starts on the first turn of the key, but then promptly cuts out. If I press the throttle pedal, it stutters for five seconds at circa 300 rpm, then dies. I am at a loss.

How we got to this place:

A couple days ago, I pulled a check engine light, and it was running a little oddly. Idling about 1200-1300 rpm. Mostly smooth, but some jerky throttle response between 1000 and 2000 rpm. And a few times I'd been slowing from 60mph in fifth gear, put the clutch in to change down to fourth, and the engine cut out. Released the clutch and it crash started and ran as normal.

I'd been meaning to get my VCDS-Lite registered, so started that. While waiting for my registration code to come through, I found some advice somewhere on the internet that suggested disconnecting the battery, waiting, and reconnecting. I did this, and that is when the starting but not running began.

My registration code has since come through, I cleared the fault codes and completed a throttle body alignment. No change.

The fault codes were:

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

16684/P0300/000768 - Ross-Tech Wiki

17536 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1 (Mult): System too Lean

17536/P1128/004392 - Ross-Tech Wiki

16891 - Idle Control System RPM: Higher than Expected

16891/P0507/001287 - Ross-Tech Wiki

plus fault codes for individual cylinder misfires, cats running below efficiency

About three months ago, I replaced both O2 sensors, the coolant temp sensor, and all spark plugs. After that it was running sweetly.

Any suggestions?

Best wishes,

Anthony
