Drivers Rack

This is my first go with this new technology (threads) so be kind.

I have a 2006 A4 Cabriolet, with 143,000 miles. Last month I had the water pump, timing belt and serpentine belt replaced for $1000 at a well respected shop in my town. Today my power steering went kaput and I took it to the same shop. He said it was the drivers rack and said to repair it would be $1,700. I was shocked and said the book value of the car is only $2,500 (per the dealer in Princeton). So for $100 he filled the reservoir with a Lucas product and said that should hold it for 6 months.

How difficult is this repair and what would be a reasonable amount to pay? Or should I just donate it. The car needs new sensors for the rag top and the radio no longer works (antenna wire cracked?) It's a beautiful car and my first and only ragtop so I'd hate to see it go. HELP!!:confused::confused::confused:
